Catherine the Great has initiated the production of a historical series of medals with portraits of the Russian rulers, which was based on the study by M. Lomonosov and the first Russian bibliographer A. Bogdanov "Brief Russian Chronicle with a Genealogy". This portrait series of medals was used in all the education institutions of the pre-revolutionary Russia as an illustrative material accompanying the information on history of the monarchy in the Russian Empire.
This series covers the rulers of Russia from Rurik to Emperor Paul, and are consecutively numbered. It is possible that there were later rulers portrayed, but the author Robert Werlich, has never seen one. Also it was quite apparent according to history books that several Russian rulers have been omitted in this series. The reasons are unknown. Individual medals can occasionally be found; to have the complete series is quite rare. This series comes only in bronze, size 38 mm.
